Dear Mark: |
My answer to your question, "What do you truly value?"
in a word is: |
TRUTH
(mind you,
I did not say "The Truth") |
Please understand that "TRUTH", as I am referring to it,
is simply beyond the comprehension of the human mind.
For that reason, any impression that we have of TRUTH
can only be a result of an accumulated perspective, and
is necessarily incomplete. Nevertheless, in so far as my
thoughts are concerned, I have been able to discern a
few things that might be relevant regarding TRUTH: One
is that we can, and perhaps should, quest for it.
Another, we may be able to glimpse very small portions
of it for brief periods of time. Finally, without
further elaboration or explanation, I can go out on a
limb and speculate that: |
The Value,
in as much as we can discern it, in
TRUTH,
may come through understanding that
"it depends". |
If we can accept this, then it suggests that we should
be able to open our hearts as well as our minds, and
allow others to be different from us without prejudice.
It also gives us a way to justify and respect our
differences, even if we do not understand those
differences. If we can do this, perhaps one day we can
learn to live as it was intended. As for me, it would
seem that it must have been intended for us to live
together in harmony. |

(If you
want to think about this further, an analogy might be
helpful. Consider "sunset". Is it a scene, or a time, or
a mood-- what is "sunset"? Even if a group of
artists were asked to use their work to explain
"sunset", we would expect that their results would vary
based on their cultures, their perspectives, their
biases, their personalities, their experiences, etc.
Differences could be major or minor, but certainly there
would be differences in interpretation, even if they
used the same sunset for their inspiration; much more so
if they used sunsets at different times, locations… So
as it may be with "sunset", so much more may it also be
with "TRUTH"-- it depends.) |
